resilience, parenthood

Nestled in the bustling town of Makeni, Sierra Leone, where community and resilience form the backbone of daily life, I found a new beginning that reshaped not just my physical capabilities but my role within my family and my community. At 28 years old, as a 'top-up' seller for mobile phone sim cards, I navigated the challenges posed by my arm amputation with a mix of ingenuity and determination. However, my personal and professional life transformed dramatically with the arrival of my first prosthetic device—the ALX sleeve.

The day I received the sleeve was a day of new beginnings. For years, I had adjusted to my disability, using my remaining hand for all my needs and work responsibilities. The ALX sleeve, however, introduced a new dimension to my life. It wasn't just about having a second 'hand'; it was about the opportunities it unlocked, especially in my role as a father.

One of the most profound impacts of the sleeve was how it enabled me to hold my baby daughter. Previously, I relied heavily on my wife and family members to help care for her. With the sleeve, I could cradle her in my arms, providing her the warmth and security of her father's embrace. This simple act, which many might take for granted, was a monumental milestone for me.

My work as a sim card seller also saw improvements. Handling sim cards and money with both hands increased my efficiency and service, boosting my business and my confidence. Customers noticed my enhanced ability to manage the stall, and their positive feedback fueled my drive to perhaps expand my business in the future.

Speaking with the community about my experiences, I shared how vital such adaptive technologies are—not just for the physical support they provide but for the emotional and social empowerment they offer. My story is not just about adapting to a disability; it's about embracing the tools that enable us to live fuller, more engaged lives.

"A New Touch" is more than my personal story; it's an invitation to recognize and invest in technologies that transform lives. My hope is that my journey inspires others in similar situations to explore the possibilities that prosthetics can offer, reaffirming the belief that with the right support, there are no limits to what we can achieve. Through this narrative, I wish to highlight the profound impact of embracing adaptive technologies on personal and professional levels, enhancing not only physical capabilities but also enriching emotional connections within families.
